All around us there are invisible forces at work. Most of us have had experiences that show us there is more to the world than meets the eye. To unravel these forces the Chinese sages observed the nature's cycles over many years and drew up a complex calendar, a system of great insight and beauty. To analyse the dynamic of time and space they had watched working around them, they developed the 32 ring lo-pan compass, in which every compass degree has a special quality. This is a principal tool of Feng Shui. The lo pan is a magnificent and intriguing geomantic tool. Each compass is individual and special to the practitioner who works with it. It displays the hexagrams of the I Ching (Book of Change) charting the subtle play of yin and yang through each year and each cycle, or groups of years. These qualities are then related to the directions. Broadly speaking south relates to summer, as it is hotter in the south and north to cold winter. Similarly east relates to spring, rising energy and west to the autumn, decaying energy. Once the broader view is observed, the subtleties within are gradually revealed. Thus early summer is still a time of growth, but as the season progresses harvest approaches and fruit ripens. The symbology of Chinese astrology is similarly simple yet meaningful on a deeply true level. The twelve animals and their elemental qualities contribute to understanding feng shui in partnership with the lo-pan compass. It is appropriate to describe a practitioner's relationship with the compass rather than use of it, as it is both magnetic and sensitive, responding to the practitioners chi, or energy.
